Default A/C fan won’t work when key is turned ON. 97 Sephia

Hey guys. Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a 97 Kia Sephia. Here’s what I need help on:

Whenever the key is turned to “Accessories”, the A/C fan works, windshield wipers work, and the windows can be moved up and down. The problem comes when the key is turned all the way to turn the car on. When the car is on, all of these components don’t work.

It used to be that I could “Trick” the car like this: if the A/C fan didn’t work when the key was turned on, then I would go back to “Accessories” so that the fan would turn on and then turn the key all the way on again. This would do the trick and the A/C fan would stay on when the car was on. This was a couple of months ago.

Recently, everything was fine. And the A/C fan and the rest of the components were working fine. But now, they wont work when the car is on. The “Trick” that I used to do before doesn’t work anymore.

Can anybody tell me what I can do about it / What might be wrong?

All help is really appreciated. Thanks again guys!

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you need a new ignition switch.

OK, Thanks so much for your help!

So about the ignition switch: how would you replace it?

Do you have to take the steering wheel out?

I see a pin that one might be able to tap out in order to replace the switch, is that how you do it?

Also, do you guys have any idea how much it costs?

Thanks a lot!
