Default Would i be better off driving this car off a cliff

I have a 96 Kia Sephia that I am using for a comuter car (60 miles one way) and it is not running worth a flip.

To start with it does not have ANY codes when i plug in the code reader.

What it is doing:
1) it does not want to idle i have to put in neutral and hold down gas peddal to keep running

2) when it is idleing properly (well on its own) it has a dead miss that flucuates when it is missing.

3) some times when i give it gas to go faster it chokes and almost dies, and some times actually dies

What I have done:
1) replaced Rotor, Cap, Wires and Plugs

2) cleaned out intake system with carb cleaner both running and not running

3) new air filter

4) replaced all rotor cap wires and plugs, thinking maybe one was defective.

5) also checked most sensors to make sure they are plugged in properly, and checked battery for good connections as well as main fuse box, alternator, starter and just about everything that has a plug on it.

6) checked compression and it has basically equal compression on all four cyl's

if i had not already put 1200 dollars for a transmission and just done a full brake job (master cyl, calipers, pads rotors, wheel bearing, drums and shoes) and new tires on all four corners, as well as all 4 new motor mounts. if not for all of that i would just scrap the car and get a new one, the only good thing is, i only paid 400 for the car. but all together i ahve about 3000 in the beast. and i am very seriously about to just drive it off a cliff.

ANY help would be very appreciated.

ron1004 thanks for the links with the tech pages that helps.

I had the same stutter when I first got my car. I replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor and did nothing. Make sure you get the NGK (BKR5SE-11) plugs and gap them at .028-.030. That solved the stutter problem for me and the car runs very good. Doing my research I found out these cars like those plugs... Is your car auto or stick? Let me know how it goes... Good Luck..

I'll agree with dem 18 for some these cars like NGK plugs. I've always used whatever brand of plug as long as it was the right #, guess thats not true anymore.

they are gapped at 30 and i am pretty sure that those are the plugs i have.

it is also an automatic.

i went through the car again this weekend and i got it to idle decently (not as good as it should) and now it is also trying to die on me while it is going down the road. it will, while holding the gas peddle steady, act like you hit the brakes and start to slow down then jsut as suddenly start back up like nothing happened.

Have you checked the ISC Idle Speed Control? Or the MAF Mass Air Flow sensor? Also I just found out that I actually had the wrong plugs so here are the ones that I have and I bought the platinum ones for the price its worth it. (BKR6ES-11)are the correct ones.. Sorry about that. Also make sure that your cables and wires and cap and rotor are good. These are the things that I changed and I just bought a MAF online on ebay to replace mine. My car is stick but I don't think there should be any difference. Forgot to ask you is yours a 1.8?

well where is the ISC? is that the part that is bolted to the bottom of the ThrottleBody? if so i have heard it called MANY differant things and yes according to the Ohlm metter it checks out like the manual says it should. tha MAF is also working properly, and yes i ahve the same plugs in mine, (they did not want to sell me those) and yes i ahve the 1.8 DOHC

i did fix the idle issue, (not really sure how) but it is idleing better than it has ever idled. my main issue now is it keeps hesitaing on me when ever i give it gas to accelerate and when i take my foot off the gas to steady my speed. this one has me baffled too.

by the way thank you for the PM that i got about where there is a great cliff to drive it off of but it is a little bit too far away.

Fuel filter may-be. Lack of gas would cause hesitation.

fuel filter would be my next guess... Here is a diagram that I have for my car so you could see where the fuel filter is..

http://www.kiatechinfo.com/data/manu...G/bf37550a.gif

It is a pain to get to... Hope this works.. But at least your making progress...

That stuttering problem I also had and it was fixed once I changed the gap on the plugs so I think that it could be the filter if not maybe try replacing the plugs..
