Default Locked in Park

My 96 Sepia sat for 12 months. Started right up but I can't get it out of Park. I've checked fuses, loose wires, linkages. Pulled the council off. can't get anything to move. When I step on the break this black box (about 2"x3"x1/2) busses but does nothing else. I can't get the box off. Any ideas?

There's something in my owners manual about how to get it out of park when it gets stuck. Must be a common occurrence. May be a problem with the little button you push to move it.

That little black box sounds like the solenoid that's used for the safety interlock to ensure that the brake is applied when shifting into gear.
Try spraying some WD40 oil onto it and see if you can get it to work properly and release the gear shift.
