Default Hiccup

I have had this hiccup problem from new. I have noticed it is not as bad when it is very cold and worst after a long motorway journey followed by a slow dawdle uphill as I decelerate then try to gently accellerate at around 1500 - 2000 rpm at lower or higher revs it is ok.
The stall that occurs is like it is hunting for fuel sometimes only a hint and other times a total engine stop.
I have had the car 2 months and have driven 7000 miles so the engine should be settled in.
I will be taking the car back to the garage soon when I mentioned it to the service manager he said "you must make sure your left foot is well clear of the brake and clutch pedals as this is probably the problem"
Thirty years of driving and repairing cars, twenty eight years an apprentice trained engineer and 400000 miles covered in the last nine years as a service engineer I think I know how to operate a car.
