Trust me, as an engineer I can assure you the bar would not be noticeably stiffer if it were solid. Most of the stiffness comes from the outer layers; the contribution of any portion of the section to bending stiffness is a function of the square of that portion's distance from the neutral axis. So the part in the middle contributes very little which is why they made the bar hollow.
