I invested in an AutoXray 4000 Scanner. I know it sounds like a lot of money for a tool, but I believe it will pay for itself over time by correctly identifying these tricky electronic problems. It has a freeze frame function that lets you capture the state of the various sensors etc. at the time of the malfunction. Maybe you can rent, or borrow, something like this to help you determine what is happening at the instant that you car switches off. Another thought would be to buy one off eBay, use it and then put it back on eBay for sale.
