That's not necessarily "dirty info".

If you connect +12V to one side of a 12V lamp, then measure from the other side of the lamp to ground you will measure a full 12V, then if you then connected the open end of this lamp to ground it would illuminate and would most certainly not be a dead short.

I would trust the poster that said connect 5 and 6 , but can't confirm this, but your method of testing is flawed.
